about

Many years ago, people started asking me where I was from and, in particular, if I grew up in the country. I have no idea why… Maybe it’s because I‘m friendly and smile at strangers. The song was rearranged for this recording, stripping the instrumentation back to bare bones. I can hear the echoes of friends and heroes in my guitar part - especially Hubert Sumlin and Bob Margolin - with maybe a dash of Slim Harpo?

lyrics

I ain’t what I seem, and you know it’s true
I ain’t what I seem, and you know it’s true
Take a gal like me, baby
Make a fool out of you!

Low-down, down-home – I’ll make you holler and yell
Low-down, down-home – I’ll make you holler and yell
Tell the truth, boys
I’m a city born country gal

I ain’t never lived in the country, maybe I never will
Never lived in the country, people, maybe I never will
But I’m as down-home baby
As a whiskey still

I can shake it, shake it - like a city gal can
And I can smile real sweet, just like a country gal can
I come from way down south
Way down south in a foreign land

Low-down, down-home – I’ll make you holler and yell
Low-down, down-home – I’ll make you holler and yell
Tell the truth, boys
I’m a city born country gal
